2025 SANS D&R Survey: The Cloud Skills Gap Persists; Automation and Machine Learning Gain Ground

The survey shows how organizations are still facing skill shortages, alert fatigue, and expanding attack surfaces. The findings reflect a continued concern in false positives, org shifts toward automation, and growing confidence in ML.

  • Cloud expertise remains a barrier: 58% of organizations say the persistent cloud skills gap is slowing detection, up from 56%
  • Automation is standard and machine learning grows: 90% of use automated tools for threat detection and 53% use machine learning
  • More love for machine learning in detection and response: 39% say it is very useful, up from 22% last year
